Hey, I’m Jess!

TO SUM THINGS UP…

I am a Christian, author in progress, former technology sales executive (who gave it all up to pursue this dream), wine lover, charcuterie master, comedian to those that think I’m funny, wife to Prince Charming, mom to three beautiful children, two adorable grand-babies, two poorly trained Bernedoodles and a fat, lazy shelter cat. Oh, and I have a completely irrational fear of birds and most other flying, buzzing, crawling, fuzzy or stinging objects.

Why I love exploring the Willamette Valley…

I’ve always been a local adventure seeker. I can’t seem to sit still to save my life (unless I’m writing or reading). I’ve only finished a handful of movies on our coach because I get so antsy. I’m a huge extrovert so I draw my energy from others and new experiences. It’s one of the primary ways I fuel my heart.

I moved to Portland 24 years ago and the city was so incredibly foreign to me. I made it a personal mission to explore as much as I could. I longed for the close sense of community I left in Boise, ID, so I found new parks, tried new coffee shops, shopped in new malls, explored trails, watched comedy, and listened to a lot of live music.

As I got older and started having a family my adventures changed to ones more family focused - sporting events, play places, trampoline parks, etc. This happened again after I met and married the love of my life. We do a lot of exploring together and both live in and love the Willamette Valley. We love living in wine country and have a passion for exploring new food, farms, wineries, breweries, and businesses on this side of town.

Since all of my friends and family live out of town I got really good at itinerary planning. I also did a lot of event hosting for my past job so I’m a seasoned planner with lots of recommendations on large group spaces and activities. Bottom line is life can be short, so I want to live in the present and bank up memories that will last a lifetime. You can’t do a lot of that from the couch or computer.

Why I started Chasing Sunsets…

I started Chasing Sunsets because everyone always says to me, “Jess, you’re always having fun. You know the coolest places and are always finding little treasures.” I was burned out from 24 years in the technology grind, traveling, and pushing huge projects up a mountain. I wanted to do something that combined my love for people, our city, writing and creativity. It came to me on a day when we were driving on I-5 and I saw people in one of the hot tub boats on the Willamette. I thought to myself, “Ah-ha, that’s IT! I want to show people how much fun this city is.”

Portland has gotten a bad wrap in the past few years, but I believe that's behind us and we are better moving forward together. I am also VERY passionate about living now. I’ve seen so many people wait until retirement to start their bucket list and unfortunately it’s often too late. My mantra is that I always want to say, “GLAD I DID vs. WISH I HAD.”
